Introducing Microsoft Azure Cloud - Brief Summary
Following the rise of Amazon and other key cloud computing players Microsoft entered the fray around Y2010. Microsoft unsurprisingly introduced an MS flair to the cloud, bringing to the fore a number of proprietary Microsoft products and services now available to rent within an SAAS framework. Microsoft application development professionals were pleased to note that Active Directory, and SQL server were now available as bundled packages allowing them to simply switch these services on without the headache of maintaining the infrastructure.
The popularity of MS Azure Cloud among Microsoft professionals and software development companies operating a pre-dominantly Microsoft technology stack saw it quickly slide into second spot behind Amazon for worldwide usage. Fast forward to December Y2018 and MS Azure now has over 100 active datacenters around the world ensuring it the top spot, in terms of geographical footprint.
So, on balance how does Microsoft Azure stack up with the current leader in the field Amazon? I think its fair to state that AWS and Amazon is in no danger of conceding its #1 position anytime soon. However, Microsoft certainly represents a credible threat from second place. Presently Amazon outstrips every other cloud service provider on sheer number of features. In recent years the Amazon technology stack has added so many services that the role of the AWS administrator has evolved into a specialist function in the IT department, with corresponding certifications. App developers here in Singapore rely heavily upon AWS technicians to manage ever more complex cloud deployments.
Microsoft remains focused on a smaller number of specialist Microsoft platforms, so it certainly has less to live up to in terms of features. Where MS has the edge is when we talk about integration with specific MS technologies: Office365, Dynamics, Sharepoint, MS Active Directory & others. For those firms who are firmly tied in the Microsoft technology stack it would be hard to argue that an Azure deployment was not the best approach. Microsoft has proven time and time again than they are ready to reinvent themselves to stay ahead of the game, and with MZ Azure Microsoft becomes more relevant for .NET app development companies in Singapore, and the world over.
